BOOKS

A Very Hungry Girl
We’re all hungry—hungry to look good, feel worthy, be loved, and fit in. Our hungers are deep and insatiable. We try to feel full by using food, alcohol, drugs, sex, relationships, careers, or money. No matter what we look like or where we came from, we all share the same intense need to fill up on life, but not many of us know how.

A Very Hungry Girl chronicles the journey of Jessica Weiner, who spent most of her life hungering to be someone else. She was so desperate to be accepted and valued that she spiraled into an eating disorder, experiencing the attendant lack of self-esteem that ruled—and almost ruined—her life.

A Woman's Book of Strength
This meld of mind and body is the foundation upon which this intelligent guide to sensible bodybuilding and overall fitness for women is built. Andes spends ample time on such factors as nutrition, overcoming fear, and achieving a balance between hard-core workouts and relaxation techniques. Andes' pep talks about self-esteem establish a positive mind-set.

Basic Black
“Basic Black does a great job of telling the story of how Cathie deftly navigated the challenges of the workplace and the media business, while also trying to balance the demands of a busy life. Her practical tips on handling typical workplace situations make this an important read for any woman who wants to become a better colleague, a better leader ... and a better person.” - Meg Whitman, President & CEO, eBay Inc.

Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow

Cofounder of the upstate New York Omega Institute and author of The Seeker’s Guide, Lesser uses her own life story, and those of others, to explore what she calls the "Phoenix Process," or positive life change that can emerge from very difficult life events.

"Never again will a painful experience wipe me out. This book shows how you can transform any difficult transition into a time of great strength and awakening." -Jane Fonda

Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips
This book gathers the lessons learned and advice offered from Carr’s own journey, as well as the experiences of her cancer posse. Full-color photos accompany personal stories and candid revelations in this scrapbook of advice, warnings, and resources for the cancer patient. The resulting book is a warm, yet informative tool for any woman newly diagnosed with the disease and for those who love them.

Eating Well for Optimum Nutrition
Hopefully, years from now, Eating Well for Optimum Health will be looked upon as the book that saved the health of millions of Americans and transformed the way we eat--not as the book we overlooked at our own peril. It clarifies the mishmash of conflicting news, research, hype, and hearsay regarding diet, nutrition, and supplementation, and further establishes the judicious Dr. Weil, the director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, as a savior of public well-being.

Eat Pray Love
Plagued with despair after a nasty divorce, the author, in her early 30s, divides a year equally among three dissimilar countries, exploring her competing urges for earthly delights and divine transcendence.

Customer Review on Amazon - "WOW WOW WOW. I love this book!! This is just an excellent "go to" book, when you are needing self-discovery, self-confidence, strength and just plain feel good fuzzies! It really helped me to fall in love with life yet again. I'm a senior grandma, so I'm not in the age category as the author, but that doesn't matter. She writes so eloquently about LIFE - LOVE - and taking chances, and letting go, believing in yourself and faith."

Fly Fit
"Keep healthy while flying and lower your risk for blood clots.
David Bloom, a reporter for NBC s The Today Show, was covering the war in Iraq when he died from deep vein thrombosis a blood clot caused by immobility. That is why Maggie Melanson wrote this book to educate others about the importance of keeping active, fit, healthy and moving while traveling.

Hunger Pains

We live in an appearance-obsessed culture. Fashion ads, magazine covers, TV shows, and movies idealize a body type that is impossible for most real women to achieve. In this comforting, liberating book, Dr. Mary Pipher, bestselling author of Reviving Ophelia, offers advice, counsel, and practical solutions for understanding our needs, our fears, and our many hungers. She shows us how we can at last learn to live at peace with the natural differences in our bodies and appetites.

Inconceivable: A Woman's Triumph over Despair and Statistics
At a time when more and more women are trying to get pregnant at increasingly advanced ages, fertility specialists and homeopathic researchers boast endless treatment options. But when Julia Indichova made the rounds of medical doctors and nontraditional healers, she was still unable to conceive a child. It was only when she forsook their financially and emotionally draining advice, turning inward instead, that she finally met with reproductive success. Inconceivable recounts this journey from hopeless diagnoses to elated motherhood.

Into the Wild
After graduating from Emory University in Atlanta in 1992, top student and athlete Christopher McCandless abandoned his possessions, gave his entire $24,000 savings account to charity and hitchhiked to Alaska, where he went to live in the wilderness. Four months later, he turned up dead. His diary, letters and two notes found at a remote campsite tell of his desperate effort to survive, apparently stranded by an injury and slowly starving.

It's Always Something

Completed before Gilda Radner's death last month, this is her personal account of her struggle with ovarian cancer and her inspiring attempt to keep an upbeat attitude during her illness. Her discussion of a Santa Monica patient support group called the Wellness Community is the best part of the book and may be of interest to cancer patients and their families.

Kiss My Tiara

Designed to help women ages 18-35 catch a life, not a husband. The book covers the gamut of a woman's world, relationships, money, self-esteem, sexual harassment in the workplace, and the guilt of ordering french fries. Gilman is a sage, insightful, and witty voice in a confusing time that will make women laugh while teaching them to feel entitled, confident, and empowered.

Ladies Who Launch
You can do it! That's the message Colligan and Schoenfeldt, cofounders of the online networking and offline support system Women Who Launch, reinforce with this at-home version of their program. Rather than step-by-step planning and checklists, they encourage would-be entrepreneurs to daydream as a way to define goals, whether it's a new business venture, changing course within a corporation or even a revitalized personal life.

Life Inside the "Thin" Cage
Frustrated by the often unrealistic standards of beauty presented by today’s media, many women have become trapped in a never-ending pattern of chronic dieting.  This book offers a wake-up call and practical steps to those who need healing. Readers will find personal stories, insights into their secret patterns and habits, reassurance that they are not alone, checklists, self-tests, and, best of all, a new road to emotional, physical, mental and spiritual freedom.

Mama Gena's School of Womanly Arts
Using the Power of Pleasure to Have Your Way with the World
Chicago Tribune - "Diva of desire Regena Thomashauer teaches women how to celebrate their passions, indulge their appetites, and adore their lives."

self-esteem comes in all sizes
Be happy and healthy at your natural weight with a title which promotes loving oneself at any weight. Johnson struggled with failed diet plans since childhood: she’s discovered weight is not a measure of self-worth, and her book recounts her experiences and tells how to develop new assessments for self-esteem.

Stolen Lives
At the age of 5, Malika Oufkir, eldest daughter of General Oufkir, was adopted by King Muhammad V of Morocco and sent to live in the palace as part of the royal court. There she led a life of unimaginable privilege and luxury alongside the king's own daughter. King Hassan II ascended the throne following Muhammad V's death, and in 1972 General Oufkir was found guilty of treason after staging a coup against the new regime, and was summarily executed. Immediately afterward, Malika, her mother, and her five siblings were arrested and imprisoned, despite having no prior knowledge of the coup attempt.

Survival of the Prettiest – The Science of Beauty
In riveting style, Etcoff, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, demolishes the belief that beauty is a cultural construct, arguing instead "that beauty is a universal part of human experience, and that it provokes pleasure, rivets attention, and impels actions that help ensure the survival of our genes.

The Beauty Myth
In a country where the average woman is 5-foot-4 and weighs 140 pounds, movies, advertisements, and MTV saturate our lives with unrealistic images of beauty. The tall, nearly emaciated mannequins that push the latest miracle cosmetic make even the most confident woman question her appearance. Wolf rejects the standard and embraces the naturally distinct beauty of all women.

The Body Image Workbook
A
n 8-Step Program for Learning to Like Your Looks
Recent customer review on Amazon
"I was recently hospitalized for an eating disorder. In the hospital we did a lot of work dealing with body image and how to improve it. Upon admittance to the hospital I was given a stack of book, and The Body Image Workbook was one of them. We did exercises in it everyday. It was hard work, but well worth it. This book forces you to look at parts of your life that you never thought were related to how you feel about your self. I continue to do exercises in it daily even now that I am out of the hospital. I recommend this book for anyone struggling with an eating disorder or body image issues. This would also be a great book to work on with a therapist and let them have insight into your responses."

The Body Myth
A groundbreaking look at adult women who struggle with eating disorders and other body issues In the relatively short history of eating disorders treatment, the overwhelming majority of patients and clients have been teenage girls and young women. This unique guide helps women and their loved ones understand eating disorders and the obsession with perfection, exploring the challenge of identifying the problem, the different eating disorder triggers adult women experience, and the various treatments available.

Walden
Walden is the classic account of two years spent by Henry David Thoreau living at Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. The story is detailed in its accounts of Thoreau's day-to-day activities, observations, and undertakings to survive out in the wilderness for two years. Thoreau's journal is an exquisite account of a man seeking a more simple life by living in harmony with nature.

Wanting to be Her
From the Author, Michelle Graham:
Over the last several years I had been working in campus ministry with college students and, more specifically, on a conference dealing with the topic of sexuality. I knew that in order to speak relevantly to the issues our women are struggling with, we needed to address the issue of body image. The pressures that young women face today to look a certain way are astronomical. . . Body image has become as much a part of our daily lives as the air we breathe.

What Are You Hungry For?
This new book by Lynn Ginsburg and Mary Taylor offers a revolutionary approach to resolving food and body issues. Leaving behind the old, stuck paradigm of women's dieting and fitness books, "What Are You Hungry For?" places the food and body conflict into the spiritual realm where it can truly be transcended.

What Women Really Want
Women are the most powerful force reshaping the future of America. Stronger than political parties, mightier than religious differences, able to leap cultural schisms in a single bound, women are quietly exerting a unified power to make changes in our culture and in commerce, meeting in the middle to achieve their goals. But they're not using traditional means such as getting together and voting or banging on closed doors to demand equal access.

When Food is Love
This is the fourth book generated by the seminars Roth conducts at her Berkeley, Calif., home for people who believe that if they were thin, they would be happy. But the author makes clear that losing weight doesn't automatically gain one success, respect and love. Roth's personal story and those of her clients as related here exemplify the need to discover why the overweight are addicted to food.

Wherever You Go, There You Are
Kabat-Zinn urges readers to practice "mindfulness," a more than 2000-year-old Buddhist method of living fully in the present, observing ourselves, our feeling, others and our surroundings without judging them. Free of trendiness, the book presents meditation as a natural activity that can be practiced anytime and anywhere, without props or trappings. This warm, witty and wise guide should bring relaxation to stressed-out people.

Wise Women
In ancient times, older women were the keepers of primal mysteries and were revered for their special wisdom. For this very special book, Joyce Tenneson traveled throughout America to photograph and interview women ages 65 to l00.  What she found was a revelation women who were vital, energetic, and deeply beautiful, inside and out.

Like the community, we've evolved over the years, and now are proud to present yogajournal.com–an interactive, in-depth, yoga community website.
